TOP TIPS TO SAVE LIGHTING ECTRICAL BILLS

Updated: May 19, 2022

With soaring electrical and gas costs hitting everyone use these simple bright ideas to help keep your lighting electric bills down.

The UK energy saving trust say that lighting accounts for around 15% of a typical households electrical bill.

    - Consider changing your lighting to LED throughout. LED lights last for thousands of hours longer than older halogen types. According to the Energy Saving Trust you could also save up to £5 per bulb per year on electricity alone!

  • Use a Smart system to automate your lights.  High end systems like Lutron and Rako offer the most bespoke in lighting management plus a beautiful range of hardware to add style to your property.  Less expensive alternatives include LightwaveRF.  These systems can work wirelessly too so installation disruption can be kept down.  Once installed a Smart system can optimise the lighting levels to specific settings for certain activities like cooking, cleaning or chilling out.  So you are not needlessly running lights that are not needed. Furthermore, systems like Lutron can include “all off switches” so you don’t leave lights on unintentionally when not home and “pathway” lights.  A pathway light function will enable you to light only a few minimum lights from one point of your home to another.  If you got home late and didn’t want to switch every light on this function allows you to illuminate a “pathway” from your front door to your bedroom for example.
  • Install movement/occupancy sensors. Used in rooms like bathrooms or toilets and low use areas these simple devices will only activate your lights when the room is in use.  They are set to keep the lights on for a specific amount of time before turning them off again when no one is in the room.
  • Think about how often you use external lights.  Running outside lights like garden lights, porch lights or driveway lights uses a lot of power.  Consider installing a timer to operate these lights only at essential times of day.
  • Security Lighting. Installing a day/night sensor will ensure these lights are only working during hours of darkness and not switched on too early or left on accidentally if you forget to turn them off.
